Equality and Diversity In The Workplace

Written by
Not sure on how to promote equality and diversity? Ever dealt with workplace discrimination?

Here's a guide on how to deal with both:

2018 was a powerful year that educated the world on equality, diversity and the LGBT+ community. It was our chance to scream and shout our views and even change the worlds views!

Equality and diversity is about respecting and understanding your staff, whether that be; age, disability, sexuality, race, culture, gender, beliefs/religion and even career history. Recent research from Bright HR tells us that creating a happy workplace culture enables your staff to be more productive, have better health and to feel more confident.

Why is this so important?

Equality and diversity is so important because it enables you to connect with your staff, gain trust and be able to have a comfortable working relationship it also enables your staff to feel fairly treated. It allows you as an employer to offer relevant resources,  ideas, benefits and skills that your team need.

By having equality and diversity in the workplace you will soon see a difference in the office environment. This is what makes your company grow and it gives your company a good reputation. The main aim is to ensure that everyone is treated fairly, respects each-other and has access to the same benefits and rewards.

More people want to work in companies that offer:

  • Knowledge
  • Better working life
  • Flexibility
  • Fun
  • Culture
  • Family feel
  • Training and development
  • Respect
  • Honesty
  • Equal pay
  • Varied workforce

By having a policy in place this will prevent disputes and your staff will know right from wrong. Some employers think that certain policies apply to their staff but they also apply to both the employer and employees.

How do I promote this?

There are many ways to enforce equality and diversity in the workplace but before you do anything you need to understand what equality and diversity actually is. By promoting equality and diversity, your company can benefit from; a comfortable and welcoming environment, happy staff, productive working, and a varied workforce. You will also see your staff coming together as a better team and working smarter!

By enforcing new policies you will attract more candidates and maintain your staff retention rate. Candidates want to work for companies that respect, have fairness and understand their staff’s needs. You need to know your customers, stand out and maintain a good reputation. All of this comes from company branding, the more you brand yourself as an equal opportunities employer, the more you will attract what you want.

To promote all of this you could put your message out on all social media platforms, tell your friends, family and customers. If you are recruiting you can even write all of your company benefits on a job description. Or you could even make a social media video on all of the fun things you do as a team! This way your audience will know that you are a good company to work for and it shows that you care.

Some benefits to offer to help promote:

  • Remote working
  • Healthcare benefits
  • Flexible working hours
  • Team building days
  • Rewards for hard work
  • Bonus
  • Games room
  • Free food
  • Gym membership
  • Birthday off
  • Monthly incentives
  • Charity days
How do I deal with discrimination in the workplace?

Most employers have never had to deal with discrimination in the workplace and they become very anxious to do so when the time comes. Some are unsure on how deal with it. You just need to seek advice and make sure you are following the correct process.

When dealing with discrimination it is important you do the following:

  • Make sure everyone is treated fairly
  • Watch what you say/mind your language
  • Seek advice
  • Act fast and professional
  • Pay attention
  • Don’t favourtise
  • Educate your staff and yourself
  • Make the process formal
  • Offer support
  • Have an open mind
  • Keep calm and collected
  • Don’t shoot the messenger
  • Keep it confidential
  • Take notes and keep logs on all complaints
  • Take the correct and appropriate action

As an employer it is your duty to prevent any workplace discrimination. By doing this you need to make sure that all of your staff are educated on The Equality Act 2010.
