Tone of your voice, why is it important?

Written by

Why the tone of your voice is just as important as what you’re actually saying.

With how the world is today, making a good impression virtually is so important and this is why we wanted to write about how important the tone of your voice is and how you may be able to improve this. When it comes to how you talk, the tone of your voice is crucial element in how someone will respond to you.

What is tone of voice and why is it important?

Your tone of voice is how you express your personality, your values and your emotions both verbally and written. If you are a candidate looking for a new job and you get invited to an interview the tone of your voice is a big part in securing the role. Employers like to match your personality with their office culture and whether you are invited for an interview face to face, via zoom or over the phone the tone of your voice lets employers know how enthusiastic, interest and confident you are with the job they are advertising. If you are a company hiring for a vacancy the tone of your voice reflects the story you want to convey to your audience and this should be consistent from the job description, interview questions and even the delivery of feedback. They all make up the overall candidate experience and give a holistic view of the organisation. According to a new study out from the University of Stirling, how high or low we pitch our tone is a good indication on how confident we are with interaction and how a steady and low pitch is perceived to be a person that will be in control of pressured situations.

How can you improve the tone of your voice?

There are a few ways to help improve the tone of your voice, one simple one is to slow down what you are saying. If we slow down the tone of our voice you can not only be heard clearly but it allows you to control what you are trying to communicate and it helps you to come across professional, calm and confident. Practice reading something reallyfastwithouttakingabreak…and then slow it right down!. According to Christina Canters another good addition to the tone of your voice is using hand gestures. When you gesture with your hands you come across more energetic and enthusiastic. If you naturally don’t gesticulate a lot try to relax your body Instead, when your body is relaxed your words are relaxed!
