How to get a career in Customer Service...

There is a growing demand for great customer service within businesses as more begin to realise the value in delivering an excellent customer experience. Customer service professionals are responsible for helping with customers' needs and ensuring that the end result is positive and always resolved.

Here are some tips on how to get into a customer service role: 

What skills do I need?

Technical knowledge: you are likely to use a CRM system to manage any issues and your customers. To solve problems you need to know a big of technical or industry knowledge.
 
Communication: You need to respond to queries in a timely manner and ensure that your communication is on top form at all times. Bad communication leads to a bad reputation, not just for you but for the company. You need to communicate with your customers in a clear and easy to understand way.
 
Empathy: This is key to any job role! But mainly in customer service as you have to be understanding and think from the customers point of view. Treat people the way that you would like to be treated in a certain situation. Interactions may begin with someone who is frustrated or angry and you are there to help them through this stressful time. If you communicate with your customers effectively and understand their feelings then this process can run professionally.
 
Patience: You may get asked a number of questions throughout your day from customers who are unhappy or want something repeated. Keep the conversation on track and remain calm and provide a positive experience.

Excellent telephone manner: Having an excellent telephone manner is key to great customer service. First impressions are everything and the customer wants to have a positive experience. Customers call back for repeat business because they are familiar with the way you function and the relationship has built up over time.   

Do I need experience?

Customer service requires varied skills and qualities to do the job. You don't always need training to go into a customer service role as full training is provided and if you start from the bottom you can work your way up even if that means staying in the same company for a number of years or working your way up through different companies.
