A Finance Assistant takes on all of the time-consuming tasks in an accounting or finance team and they also help the professionals to become more productive. To work in accounts you are expected to be numerically minded and to have excellent Excel and computer skills - the reason for this is because you will be dealing with large amounts of financial data. What does the job entail?
You will be responsible for being support for an accounting or finance team so many of your duties will include; collecting and recording financial information, making sure that balances are up to date, help monitor budgets, reconciling account balances, preparing invoices and receipts and many more. Very often Finance Assistants are involved in administrative tasks such as setting up appointments, taking calls and directing the calls and managing the finance and accounts team diary.
Do I have to have a qualification?
Some employers prefer candidates who have a qualification but that is not necessary as you can always train on the job. However, the desired qualification is an AAT which you may have heard of. If you are not qualified then the employer will look at your strong mathematical qualifications and will take it from there. It really depends on the industry of the employer but very often they will expect you to have a relevant degree or previous on the job training. If you are a school leaver then you can have all of the training in house and employers will put you through an AAT course to gain the correct and relevant qualifications for the job.
Do I have to have experience?
Experience isn't always necessary, if you have proven that you can do the job then show the employer what you are capable of. Some expectations are the usual; excellent mathematical skills, good working knowledge of MS Excel, excellent communication skills both written and verbally, confident training skills and an eagerness to learn and most of all excellent high attention to detail. But if you have experience then this is an added bonus!

In terms of salary expectations, Finance Assistant's annual salary in the UK ranges from £18,500 to £28,000, depending on what skills and experience is required for the role. It also depends on what industry the employer is in and how much they are willing to pay and also the location of the job.
Is there growth in the role?
Job growth all depends on what type of work you do and if you want to grow your role. It is often offered when another role comes up or if the business is expanding and if you are committed enough to want to do further training. Research from Chron tells us that a Finance Assistants job role will grow by 9% through 2026. This represents the addition of 127,900 jobs.
