Why grammar is important on your CV

Written by
National Grammar Day was established in 2008 by Martha Brockenbrough, the founder of the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar. This day is to write well, speak well and help others do the same! We are celebrating the English language by studying up on grammar mistakes, proofreading and writing.

Grammar is useful and helps us to be clear when sharing our thoughts. Finding a spelling mistake, misused or misspelled word can be very satisfying. Knowing the rules of grammar and using them in everyday life can help with your personal development and can help you to teach others. Good grammar can even help you get your dream job. Here's how:

Grammar on your CV and how to get it right:

Spend time on your CV and don't rush! Your CV is a small detailed introduction of yourself which can help you secure your dream job. How you present and write your CV says a lot about you, your skills, abilities, personality and professionalism. Your CV is a foot through the door and no matter how many qualifications or experience you have, spelling mistakes can be detrimental to your job search.

If you have spent hours writing your CV, it is very easy to go word blind. It never hurts to have another set of eyes look at your CV. Ask a trusted friend or family member to proofread for you or simply use the spell check on Word or find an an online spell checker.

How to structure your CV:

Keep your CV relevant and focussed on the jobs that you are applying for. Most candidates have up to 4 different CV's which are tailored to certain jobs. Ensure that your sentences are structured and detailed. Here is a structure of how your CV should look:

  1. Name Address and other personal details
  2. Personal Profile: This is a paragraph about yourself and your key skills
  3. Most recent employment should be at the top and your oldest employment should be last. This makes it easier for employers and recruiters to read your CV
  4. Education: This is very important as employers and recruiters need to see how you have progressed throughout your school and college years. If you have extra qualifications or went to university, always add these on as these show signs of commitment
Make sure your CV reads up to at least 2 pages. If your CV is too long, employers and recruiters will lose interest. Therefore it is important to make your CV relevant and focussed.

Common mistake to avoid on your CV:

  • Avoid abbreviations. This will cut down on mistakes and make you come across more professional.
  • Get someone to proofread your CV when you have finished.
  • Make sure you have read your CV thoroughly and that it makes sense.
  • Never lie on your CV - this can be very detrimental in the application and interview process.
  • Don't rush your CV, spend enough time on it to make it perfect. Remember that your CV is a first impression!
