How to get a career in Construction

A career in construction doesn't have to begin and end with labouring or bricklaying. With degrees and apprenticeships available there are all kinds of options to develop your career. With every job you are expected to start from the bottom and work your way up. If you put in the hard work and effort and be a team player then your boss can rely on you and you will go a long way which will eventually get you to where you want to be. 

Here's 3 ways to get a career in construction:

Apprenticeship:

It is never too late to enroll yourself onto an apprenticeship, whether it is self-funded or through college or a company, you will find this very beneficial to enhance your skills and knowledge. Apprenticeships enable to 'earn while you learn'. It gives you the opportunity to gain a qualification and extra knowledge in a job that you want to do. It also helps on your CV when you want to progress further.

University:

Before considering university make sure you research the industry and the type of job you want to go into. Make sure it is right for you and enroll yourself onto a university degree. The university degrees for this industry take around 3-4 years to complete. Degrees show employers that you are dedicated and willing to make a big investment in your future career.

  • Construction degree apprenticeships
  • BTECs
  • HNDs
  • Foundation degrees
  • Undergraduate degrees
  • NVQs in specific trades
Word of mouth:

If you are lucky enough to have family members or friends in the trade then you will find this the easiest way to get into the industry. You will need to have a CSCS card and able to work on sites. The company might even put you through an apprenticeship or relevant courses to be able to do the job. If you do a a good job and impress then you can work your way up.
