Are you an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer ready to take the next step into a senior position where you can combine hands-on engineering with technical leadership and mentoring? We are recruiting for an established engineering manufacturer in Haverhill who is looking to expand their Design Engineering team with the addition of a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer.

This is not a purely managerial position. You will remain heavily involved in your own design projects, taking concepts through development, manufacture, testing and continuous improvement, while also becoming a key technical point of support for the wider design team. Alongside delivering your own projects, you will use your experience to mentor and coach other engineers, review designs, share technical knowledge and help maintain high engineering standards across the department.

This is an excellent opportunity for an accomplished Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys being hands-on but is ready to take on greater technical responsibility and play an important part in the development of both products and people.

Job Duties:

• Taking technical ownership of mechanical design projects from initial concept through to manufacture, testing and implementation.

• Designing robust, practical and user-focused industrial products and machinery incorporating manual, semi-automated and PLC-controlled systems.

• Creating detailed 3D CAD models for components, fabrications and complete mechanical assemblies.

• Producing and reviewing accurate 2D manufacturing drawings, ensuring appropriate dimensions, tolerances and engineering standards are applied.

• Acting as a senior technical point of contact within the Mechanical Design team.

• Supporting, coaching and mentoring other Design Engineers, helping to develop their technical knowledge and problem-solving capabilities.

• Reviewing designs and providing constructive technical guidance to ensure quality, manufacturability and consistency.

• Working collaboratively on larger and more technically complex engineering projects.

• Supporting the development and improvement of engineering processes, standards and best practices within the department.

• Preparing and reviewing technical documentation required for the specification, manufacture, assembly, testing and ongoing support of machinery.

• Working closely with manufacturing, controls and wider engineering teams to ensure designs are practical, reliable and suitable for production.

• Supporting prototype builds within the engineering workshop and resolving technical issues throughout development.

• Designing and conducting functional testing, reliability testing and user trials.

• Investigating engineering change requests and leading appropriate design improvements.

• Identifying opportunities to improve product reliability, durability, manufacturability, assembly and serviceability.

• Ensuring mechanical designs meet relevant compliance and engineering requirements.

• Providing high-level mechanical engineering and design support across the wider business.

What are looking for:

• Experience within Mechanical Design Engineering, ideally within industrial machinery, equipment or engineered products.

• A strong technical background with the confidence to support and guide other engineers.

• Previous experience mentoring, coaching or providing technical guidance to junior or less experienced engineers would be highly desirable.

• You do not necessarily need to be an experienced people manager; however, you should be comfortable taking a lead from a technical perspective.

• Proven experience taking mechanical design projects from initial concept through to manufacture and testing.

• Excellent 3D CAD skills with the ability to produce and review detailed engineering drawings.

• Strong understanding of engineering draughting principles, tolerancing and design standards.

• Good knowledge of manufacturing processes with the ability to design components and assemblies with manufacture in mind.

• Experience working with MRP systems, Bills of Materials and product data management systems.

• Strong understanding of Design for Manufacture, Design for Assembly and Design for Serviceability principles.

• Confidence challenging designs and making informed technical decisions.

• Excellent attention to detail with strong design checking and reviewing capabilities.

• Ability to manage your own workload and projects while supporting the priorities of the wider team.

• A collaborative approach with the ability to communicate technical information effectively across engineering and manufacturing teams.
