Working from home during COVID-19

Written by
With COVID-19 proving that it is spreading faster than we expected, the government has put many new procedures in place to keep everyone healthy and safe and to ensure that the virus stops spreading. We are all taking extreme precautions to ensure we are not spreading the virus such as; washing our hands, keeping ourselves fit, hydrated, avoiding handshakes and human interaction. The government has asked companies to work from home to stop this virus spreading and to stay indoors. Remote working is now becoming the normal working life for many companies with their staff testing out working from home.

Remote working is something that you must learn, even though you need to complete the same work that you do in the workplace, you're at home with lots of distractions. If you have never worked from home before then this can be very difficult as you have a routine that you have been used to for years. The key to successful home working is to stick to your routine, plan your days and stay in contact with your team/colleagues.

Here are some working from home tips during COVID-19:

  • Set your work area up the night before so you are ready to go in the morning and then you don't have to spend 30 minutes every morning setting up your equipment
  • Work your set hours
  • Stay in your routine
  • Avoid distractions
  • Create a clean and distraction free work-space
  • Interact with your team/colleagues over the phone, Skype or Zoom
  • Hold digital meetings to avoid going out
  • Plan your day by writing a to do list and stick to it
  • Stay positive and enjoy your work day
  • Take small breaks
  • Get some fresh air
  • Don't lose focus
  • Don't take your work to bed and switch off
  • Eat healthy and stay hydrated
  • Wash your hands

Tips for working from home with kids:

With the recent news of schools having to close for a few months there are many parents who are finding themselves working from home while parenting. Hopefully these tips will help you to juggle the two. (Some of the tips are the same as above).

  • Explain COVID-19 to your children and why it is so important to isolate
  • Communicate to your employer and explain that you are working from home with your children
  • Plan activities for your children that don't need supervision
  • Set up a reward system with your children and reward them for good behaviour
  • Introduce a home-schooling plan and take it in turns with a partner who is living in the same house
  • Stick to your routine and create your working plan
  • Hold digital meetings to avoid going out
  • Interact with your team/colleagues over the phone, Skype or Zoom
  • Work your set hours
  • Don't take your work to bed and switch off
  • Ensure you have family time after your working hours
  • Create yourself a home office and avoid distractions
  • Get some fresh air
  • Take small breaks
  • Wash your hands and ensure your household do the same

The importance of working from home during COVID-19:

The government has put in new policies for us to avoid spreading the virus. We must stick to these policies and listen and even educate ourselves as not only does it affect one of us, it affects the whole world and even if you think you're healthy and do not have any symptoms then you could be very wrong. The virus lives on surfaces for up to 3 days and it is crucial that we isolate ourselves from any outdoor/human contact unless necessary. By necessary we mean, going to the supermarket to get supplies or human contact with your current household. The work from home policy applies to all companies except key workers. A key worker is a public sector or private sector employee who is considered an essential service.
