World Autism Awareness Day

Written by
World Autism Awareness Day is an internationally recognised day on 2nd April every year. This day encourages people to raise awareness about people with Autism Spectrum Disorder throughout the world. This day aims to put the spotlight on the difficulties that people with autism and others living with autism face every day.

What is autism?

Autism is not an illness, it means that the brain works in a different way to other people. It is a condition which also affects the way people experience the world around them. Studies from action.org.uk tells us that at least one in 100 children in the UK has an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism can affect communication, thought, social interaction and flexibility.

Talents, Skills & Abilities:

Autism does not mean that you cannot make friends, get a job or enjoy life. Autistic people have many things that they are good at and often have better talents, skills and abilities than people who are not autistic. Many autistic people have exceptional skills that enable them to be successful in job roles. Here are some of the many talents:

  • Computer literate
  • Good with timing
  • Good organisational skills
  • Able to keep to a routine
  • Strong memory skills
  • Mathematical or artistic ability
  • Musical talent
Working with autism:

Autistic employees need some support in the workplace and by taking simple steps your business will be meeting the Equality Act 2010 which is a requirement for employers to make reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities. Here are some top tips from autism.org.uk:

  • Provide training and monitoring
  • Clarify expectations of the job
  • Give clear, concise and specific instructions
  • Regular performance reviews
  • Ensure the work environment is well-structured
  • Provide sensitive but direct feedback
  • Support your staff member and prepare them for changes
  • Provide reassurance in stressful situations
  • Help other staff to be more aware
  • Ask about sensory distractions
