Do you find interviews challenging? Do you need a technique to help you answer some of those difficult questions? The STAR technique allows you to share examples and experience of successfully handling both good and bad situations to show you have the skills required for the job you are interviewing for.

What does STAR stand for?

  • Situation – Describe the event or situation you were in.
  • Task – Explain the task you had to complete.
  • Action – Describe the specific actions you took to complete the task.
  • Result – Close with the result of your actions.

What questions does this help you with?

The STAR interview response method is a way of helping you to answer behavioural interview questions. Behavioural interview questions are questions about how you have behaved in the past. Specifically, they are about how you have handled certain situations at work.Employers use this technique to analyse jobs and define the skills and qualities that previous employees have excelled In.

Since past performance can be a good predictor of the future, interviewers ask these questions to determine whether candidates have the skills and experiences required to excel in the job.

For example, employers might be looking for proof of problem-solving skills, analytical ability, creativity, perseverance through failure, writing skills, presentation skills, teamwork orientation, persuasive skills, quantitative skills, or accuracy.

Examples of these questions include:

  • What was the biggest challenge you faced?
  • How did you overcome it?
  • What is your biggest achievement?
  • And why?
  • Tell me about an occasion when you had to complete a task under a tight deadline.
