As the days get longer and the spring sunshine starts to appear, it’s not just your home or workspace that deserves a tidy-up, your CV could likely use a refresh too.

Whether you're passively open to new roles or actively job hunting in the manufacturing or engineering sector, your CV is your first impression. At Busy Bee Recruitment, we review hundreds of technical CVs each month, and we know what hiring managers want to see, and what makes them switch off.

So, before the busy hiring season kicks in, here are our top CV spring-cleaning tips for 2026.

1. Start With a Clear, Modern Format

Avoid overcomplicated designs. Keep your layout clean, structured, and easy to scan.

✅ Use a professional font (e.g. Arial, Calibri)
✅ Stick to bullet points for responsibilities and achievements
✅ Keep it to 2 pages max (unless you're highly experienced)

Busy Bee Tip: Recruiters and employers often skim CVs in under 10 seconds. Make sure your strengths stand out quickly.

2. Tailor It to the Role You Want

A generic CV may get you some attention, but a targeted one gets interviews.

If you’re applying for a CNC Machinist, Maintenance Engineer, Design Draughtsperson, or Project Manager role, tweak your profile and keywords to reflect the job description.

💡 Include industry-specific terminology, software (e.g. AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Siemens), machinery, or processes relevant to the role.

3. Highlight Practical, Hands-On Experience

In manufacturing and engineering, hands-on experience matters.

Clearly outline:

  • Machines you’ve operated or maintained
  • Processes you’ve worked on (e.g. lean manufacturing, PLC fault finding)
  • Industries you’ve worked within (e.g. automotive, aerospace, FMCG)
  • Compliance or safety procedures followed (e.g. ISO standards, H&S protocols)

Don’t just list duties, show your impact. What did you improve, reduce, streamline, or fix?

4. Check Your Dates and Career Gaps

Be honest and clear about your work history. Unexplained gaps or inconsistent dates can raise red flags.

  • Use month/year format for clarity (e.g. Jan 2021 – Dec 2023)
  • Briefly explain career breaks (e.g. “Parental leave” or “Redundancy due to company closure”)

If you’re currently employed, use “Present” and make sure your most recent achievements are front and centre.

5. Add Training, Certifications & Tech Skills

Engineering and manufacturing evolve quickly. Employers want to see that you’re keeping up.

Include:

✅ Health & safety training (e.g. IOSH, NEBOSH)
✅ Software knowledge (e.g. SAP, AutoCAD, Fanuc)
✅ Technical certifications or apprenticeships
✅ Any continuous improvement initiatives you’ve contributed to

Busy Bee Bonus: Even if a qualification is pending, add it with the expected completion date.

6. Cut the Clutter

Your CV isn’t an autobiography, focus on relevance.

❌ Ditch outdated roles from over 15 years ago (unless still relevant)
❌ Skip personal details like age, marital status, or full address
❌ Avoid generic phrases like “team player” or “hardworking” without examples
